The Geological Society’s Careers Day is the essential meeting place for geoscience students and the geoscience industry. The day will include presentations on careers and an exhibition fair.  University undergraduates and postgraduates will have the chance to find out about the latest career options, and talk to industry leaders about how they may gain entry into that sector. There will also be some University representatives available to discuss MSc and PhD programmes.

CV and Interview Workshops

There will be a CV and Interview workshop running alongside the talks and also one during the lunch break. These will be approximately 20-30 minutes with time for questions There are limited places, so we are asking people to register their interest before the event, so if you would like to participate please inform us when registering. 

Jane Barrett, The Careers Farm
A former recruiter, Jane is Head of Career Coaching at The Career Farm www.thecareerfarm.com which provides career coaching and workshops to students at Universities and Business Schools in Europe.  She is the co-author of the book ‘If not now when? How to take charge of your career’ published by Bloomsbury.
 

The BGS Geological Walk

We will be offering attendees a chance to take part in ‘The BGS Geological Walk’. The walk celebrates the diverse geology of Britain and Northern Ireland through a display of impressive specimens and natural stone paving.  More information about the walk can be found on the BGS website.

The walks take approximately 30 minutes, and are free to participate in but there are limited spaces so they will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. If you would like to participate, please inform us when registering.

Virtual Fieldwork 3D Demo

We will also be offering students the chance to take part in a 30 minute Virtual ‘Fieldwork for real geologists’ demonstration. GeoVisionary 3D visualisation software was developed jointly by Virtalis and the BGS, and it is used all over the world by geological surveys, mining companies and environmental researchers. The demonstrations are free to participate in but there are limited spaces so they will be on a first come, first served basis. If you would like to participate then please inform us when registering.

Keyworth Core Store Tours

The BGS operates the largest core facility in the UK at Keyworth. It has recently been extended and now has space for over 18 000 pallets of drillcore and 80 000 trays of samples, weighing up to 10 000 tons. Further information about the store can be found at the BGS website.

There will be an opportunity to go on a tour of the core studio, and visitors will also be able to see fossils and 3D scanning. The walks are 45 minutes. They tours are free to participate in but there are limited spaces and they are on a first come, first served basis. If you would like to participate then please inform us when registering.
